A simple but fun way to Play5 and you don’t need much to have a lot of fun.
You can buy a bulk supply of bubble mixture from most good toy stores or you can just use some dish washing liquid.
Let the bubble blowing begin and have a great time trying to catch all the bubbles before the “pop”.
Four Square
This is a great way to Play5 if you’ve got a few friends around – and best of all you don’t need much!
Here’s what you will need:
A bouncy ball
Four friends or family members (or more)
Chalk
A big piece of concrete
How to play:
Draw this.
You all have a square that has a ranking. The best square is number one, it’s called ‘King’; the second-highest square is number two and so on.
To start the ‘King’ stands outside their square, bounces the ball into their square then hits the ball into someone else’s. Then they hit the ball into another square. You keep going till someone gets out.
You’re out when:
the ball bounces twice before you hit it
your shot goes out of bounds
you get hit by the ball on the full
you hit the ball on the full
If the ball bounces on the line – it’s a REPLAY!
Once you’re ‘Out’, you move back to the fourth square (bad luck!), and everyone else moves up. When playing on the driveway or near the street get an adult to check that it’s safe first.
Hopscotch
Another oldie but a goodie! Hopscotch is a great way to Play5, so hop to it!
What you need:
Pebble
Chalk
Mates or not
Piece of concrete – a path or driveway is good
How to Play:
With the chalk draw this – don’t worry it’ll wash off!
Throw your pebble into the first square. If it lands in a different one, your turn is over.
Hop on every square, jumping over the one with the pebble, and hop back. Pick up your pebble (still on one foot) on the way back. Repeat for all the squares.
If you step on a line, miss a square, or fall over, your turn is over. Next time start where you left off. First finished wins!
Obstacle Course
Here’s your chance to be a real action hero and Play5! Set up your own obstacle course.
The ultimate course: Swamp jump – Lay out three boxes or cushions in a line about a metre apart then jump from one to another without touching the grass. Cave crawl – Make a tunnel by putting a blanket across the back of two chairs then crawl through on your stomach. Dodging the enemy – Lay out four tin cans or empty ice cream containers in a zig-zag about half a metre apart then run in and out of them as fast as you can. Laser beam move – Lay a broom across the backs of two chairs then limbo underneath without touching it. Log balance – Set up a long plank of wood or bench then walk along it without falling off.
Time how long it takes you to get through the course. Try to beat your own time or race each other!
Other ideas
Play ball – catch, backyard cricket, basketball (one on one).
Frisbee fun – you dog will love to join in too.
Chasey or tag is a great way to get you huffing and puffing while having lots of fun.
Ten Pin Bowling
Make your own Ten Pin Bowling set for a fun way to Play5.
What you need:
Collect ten plastic bottles or milk cartons of the same shape all with lids.
Some sand or rice
A funnel
A small plastic cup
A ball
Create the pins:
Place the funnel into the opening of the plastic bottle
Using the plastic cup to scoop the sand then pour into the funnel to place a small amount of sand or rice into the bottom of the bottle – the more sand the harder it will be to knock over.
Once you have enough sand, screw the lid onto the bottle.
Repeat the process until you have your ten pins.
How to play:
Arrange the bottle into a triangle shape starting with one at the front, two behind etc. Stand a couple of metres away and roll the ball trying to knock over as many pins as you can.
Keep a score card. Experiment using different balls and different bowling distances, this way the whole family can join in the fun.
Water Bombs
Here’s a great way to stay cool this summer! You can simply buy some cheap balloons, place the opening of the balloon over the nozzle of you tap and fill with a small amount of water then tie the end of the balloon. Place them into a bucket – just incase you have any breakages. When you have filled enough balloons carry the bucket outside and let the Play5 fun begin.

Water Slide
Who needs a pool for those super hot days when you’re stuck at home! Why not Play5 with your own water slide?
What you need to find:
A large piece of plastic. Try and find some around the house – could be some packaging plastic in the garage. If not, head to the hardware store – about 5 metres is a good amount.
A grassy slope
The garden hose
Heaps of washing-up liquid from the kitchen
Tent pegs
The set-up:
Run the piece of plastic down the grassy slope (check there’s no sharp bits in the grass). Make sure there is enough room for a run up, and stopping area at the bottom so you don’t slide into anything ugly. Attach the plastic to the ground with tent pegs (pushed well in).
Turn the hose on to a trickle and sit it at the top of the slide, making sure it wets all the plastic. Squirt washing-up liquid to make the slide real slippery.
Play5 – the sliding way! Adults go down the slide first for a test run, and for giggles!
