The Play5 for Kids project was funded by Telstra Foundation and ran from 2005-2006.
The Play5 message was evaluated through a randomised controlled trial involving seven-year-old children recruited through 14 primary schools in Perth, Western Australia. Children attending 13 other schools acted as controls. The children were supported in choosing to play 5 times every day over a 24 week period.
The results revealed some significant changes in physical activity levels and sedentary behaviours.
Parents, teachers and the children found the concept effective, helpful, motivating and easy to follow.
Some preliminary findings have been presented at conferences and the final results are in preparation for publication.
A Teacher Manual supporting teachers in implementing the Play5 message has recently been published (Hands, Parker, Rose, Larkin, & Geneff, 2007).
